Sort of.
It seems like kind of a huge and extraordinary situation that we mindful eaters in the Boston area have found ourselves in. As all the color and life and fresh local veggies are siphoned from the world, a handful of regional farms have announced new ventures to keep us eating well through the winter. There are now four, at least by our count, ways to extend your CSAs until early spring 2010.
We’ve mentioned Shared Harvest CSA before: the multi-farm CSA that drops off once a month for three months or two, depending on which size you choose. We’ve also written about Enterprise Farm’s year-round operations.
But here’s the news: Red Fire Farm and Stillman’s are also offering shares. Some details:
Stillman’s: Three Saturday pickups, two in November, one in December. Cost: $150, limited to 100 members. Jamaica Plain pickup only.
Red Fire: Dropoffs every two weeks in January, February and March, all at the Metro Pedal Power headquarters in Union Square. (You can also pay a little extra and the bike peeps will deliver it straight to your place.) Cost: $240. Egg shares available too: $35 per dozen/each distribution.
We know for certain there are still a couple of slots available for Shared Harvest. We got our first load from that share over the weekend — 60 lbs of food. Plus we got a dozen eggs and some cheese from Fiore di Nonno. And Enterprise’s enrollment is seemingly infinite and open: You can sign up now or in the middle of February; whenever, and they’ll pro-rate your order.
Are we missing any other shares? Do tell us. We’re trying to build out a whole Winter CSA page.

Drumlin’s winter CSA goes now-ish through February, and Brookfield’s runs December - March, though it doesn’t look like they’re doing city drops in the winter (but you get to go pick stuff out of their root cellar yourself and harvest kale in the snow, it seems).
Farm Direct Co-op has an extended season (two pick-ups in November) and a winter share (one pickup, in late nov I think). I don’t know if they offer to folks who weren’t part of the regular season CSA. They also offer bulk orders of winter veggies - potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, cabbage, etc. My folks are coming to visit for Thanksgiving and I told them to get ready, you will be cuddling up to cabbages in the guest room
I have a winter share from Stone Soup Farm (in Belchertown) that goes through the end of December. It has eggs and veggies. My pick up is in Harvard Square, but I know they also have one at the Non Profit Center near South Station.
I don’t know if they have any left though!
Damn. I want a starting-after-mid-December winter CSA, but only if it’s cost-effective. I asked Red Fire how much their shares weighed, hoping they’d compare to the Shared Harvest ones last year (which were hyuge). But RF said the Deep Winter shares will weigh about 14 lbs—nowhere near as large. Damn.
Our CSA with Stone Soup has two dropoffs in November and two in December, 15-20 lbs. each, for $130.
There is a 7-week indoor farmers’ market planned for Wayland. The Wayland Winter Market takes place on Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM from January 16th through February 27th. The location is the greenhouses at Russell’s Garden Center, 397 Boston Post Road (route 20).
Just wanted to add that Enterprise Farm has just added Lawrence as a pick-up site for the winter/spring shares for all of those of us who live north of the city but wish we had all the food options Boston has to offer :-). Contact the farm or missy carroll (missycarroll@gmail.com) for more info (that’s me and the pick up is at my house :-).
